Don’t Do it: Why You Should Never Drink Bong Water

You Should Never Drink Your Bong Water

If you’ve run out of weed, you may have wondered if it’s okay to drink the bong water. Or perhaps you’ve heard that bong water will get you high. Is this true or an urban legend?

Bong water is used to filter out harmful substances like tar, ash, and cytotoxins, so you don’t inhale these when taking a drag. As a result, the water in the pipe  or bong gets dirty quickly. Still, think you want to drink that bong water?

Maybe you’d want to think again..

What’s in Your Bong Water?

For one, there’s water in your bong. But it’s the type of water that matters. Tap and bottled water often contain bacteria; bottled water is more so, actually. Thus, this bacteria will be present in your bong water.

When you smoke cannabis with your bong, tar is created, and a thick, black resin builds up quickly. Along with this, loose bits of ash or weed also are left behind in the bong.

A fungus called Aspergillus grows on the cannabis plant. When your weed is heated, this fungus breaks down into mycotoxins. Inhaling these toxins can cause lung disease.

If you don’t clean your bong regularly, fungi and mold will grow in the stagnant water. Other microorganisms and yeast also grow there.

Other environmental pathogens in your bong water include Staphylococcus, E. coli, Proteus, Serratia, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, and Streptococcus. These bacteria can be transferred to your bong if you share your weed with friends or handle the weed with unsanitary hands.

If you want to drink dirty bong water that’s full of toxic particles or pathogens, chances are you won’t be able to keep this liquid down for long. There’s a high probability thebong water will make you sick

Drinking bong water has several side effects, including nausea, dizziness, severe headaches, and others. Plus, there’s a chance you’ll develop instant pneumonia.

Can You Get High From Bong Water?

You would need to drink more than 0.66 gallons of bong water even to stand a chance ofgetting high. However, likely, you wouldn’t be able to keep the dirty water down long enough for the THC to be absorbed. So why even try?

Technically, bong water hasTHCA, not THC, since THC isn’t water-soluble. So you’d need to decarboxylate (or boil) the bong water to convert the THCA into THC.

This would only make the bong water taste even worse, and it becomes more carcinogenic in the process.

Why You Need to Clean Your Bong Regularly

Since you now know that you shouldn’t drink bong water, you may wonder whether it’s safe even to keep using it in your bong.

It’s a bad idea to reuse bong water, especially if you see that abiofilm or cloudy layer has formed. This is because pathogens like black mildew, E. coli, Strep, and more could be present in the water.

Regularly cleaning your bong makes the cleaning process easier too. A thick, sticky resin builds up if you don’t clean your bong after extended use. You would need quite a lot of elbow grease to properly clean your bong and get rid of that thick resin.

More importantly, cleaning your bong makes for a better weed experience. Clean water in your bong lets you taste all the terps. Bongwater dirtied with ash, resin, tar, and who knows what else impacts the flavor of your kush.

Clean water also ensures better filtration. Fresh water is more effective at filtering toxins, ash, and other plant matter from your weed.

Another reason to regularly clean your bong is that your equipment will last longer. It’ll stay free from imperfections and stains with regular cleaning.

Ideally, it’s recommended to clean your bong before each session. However, definitely clean your bong if it starts reeking, the water is brown, you see thick resin buildup, or there’s mold.

Final Thoughts on Not Drinking Bong Water

Taking the chance and drinking bong water because you heard the urban myth that it’d get you high isn’t worth it. In addition to the bacteria often found in tap or bottled water, there’s also tar, mold, yeast, fungi, and other pathogens lurking in the bong water.

Apart from not being able to stomach it, you won’t get high, nor will it be a tasty experience.

Clean your bong after or before each session to ensure you can taste the terpenes in your weed. Your bong and glass pipes will last longer, and your kush will be better filtered.

Sounds like a win, right?
