Billy Bob´s Glass

Hello World of Bongs Community, today we talk with Billy Bob´s Glass, master of the no fume fume tech, about his live as artist:
WHAT GOT YOU INTERESTED IN GLASS IN THE FIRST PLACE?
I grew hydroponics in the 90s, and had money to burn. I used to fly around the country and have glass blown for me from different artists…… my addiction was born. I got busted growing in 2003 and repossessed a torch and a kiln from my partner for some money that he owed me, it sat around in my basement for about six or eight months before I took it out and tried to make a pipe. The first one was ugly as hell, but you can use it, within a month I was selling $8 spoons at the local head shop.

WHERE DID YOU LEARN YOUR SKILLS?
I am 100% self-taught… But I did watch quite a few of my pieces being made years before, but I really didn’t remember anything that they did, learning to blow glass was pretty tough by myself.  Early 2000s, no-one shared techs or secrets.

DO YOU CREDIT ANY OTHER GLASS BLOWER WITH HELPING YOU ACHIEVE YOUR SUCCESS?
I’d have to give ALOT of credit to glasspipes.org ….it allowed me to watch great artists like Banjo,  Mike Luna,  and Darby hone their skills.  * they may not have been giving away their secrets, but they were providing inspiration on an epic level. I just played every step they made backwards until i figured it out.

TALK TO ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR STYLE.

My inspiration comes from artist that I look up to, from the past and from the present. Whether it’s something that Banksy did last week, or something that banjo did almost two decades ago. Beauty is timeless, so is art.

WHAT MATERIALS DO YOU MOST LIKE TO WORK WITH?

I mainly use straight silver in 90% of my work. I like the fume and the color change aspect of glass probably more than I like color work.

WHAT’S THE MOST EXPENSIVE/BEAUTIFUL PIECE YOU’VE EVER MADE?

In 2006, I was living in Gainesville Georgia and I had a kid that I had met on Tokecity, fly up to Atlanta and spend a week with me going over what he wanted, and he brought a bunch of broken pieces that he wanted upcycled into something new and beautiful. We took half a dozen roor pill bottle ash catchers and double-layered and recycled them along with some of the new cutting-edge in-line technology and made a $4k piece….. it was so surreal. I’ve never attempted anything near that big since.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT ON THE PATH TO “MAKING IT” AS A GLASS ARTIST?

I had been working all night on a set of marbles for someone and had waited until the last minute to get them done. I was blowing glass in the screened in pool room, and I nodded off on the torch and my hand came down and bumped the top of the torch and knocked the marble off of the cold seal. It rolled down into my lap, and burnt a sizable hole in my nut….. try going to the ER and showing them your burn up testicles. It was brutal, and way more than embarrassing.

AND WHAT WAS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT?

3 years ago I dropped #nofumefumetech after a long 5 year break.  It was something that I had been working on in 2006 but hadn’t had a chance to work on anymore because of my divorce and hiatus from glass blowing……. people were blown away, I knew that I had made the right choice and coming back to glass.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO NEW GLASS ARTISTS?

To be inspired by everything in their lives. And to give credit to people that spent days weeks months and years working on something just so that they could have something new in their arsenal.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE STRAIN/EXTRACT, AND WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE TO DAB IT IN?

There are way too many strains for me to pick a favorite. I love them all… And I have a little Fat Bottomed squat rig that I love to dab out of, the air volume is small so that I can get monster rips without killing myself.

IF YOU COULD MAKE YOUR “DREAM” PIECE, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?

I’ve been drawing on it for a couple of years now, alien abduction scene, all of the different sections of the rig will be under clear bubbles like the Jetson’s cars/spaceships.

WHO WOULD YOU LIKE, MOST OF ALL IN THIS WORLD, TO HIT YOU UP FOR A PIECE, AND WHAT PIECE WOULD YOU MAKE FOR HIM/HER?

I got a custom order through a head shop in LA from Matthew McConaughey 11 years ago… I would love for him to want another piece from me now that I’m much better, and now that I have the time and patience to build something spectacular.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR GLASS ARTISTRY IN THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY?

Smoking wise…hmmmmm, probably a motorized recycler that blows the smoke to you. Or maybe just a rig that you only have to pull on for a second or two to get it all cycling, then it just keeps running and blowing the smoke to you. (That’s in the works as well)

IF YOU WERE SHIPWRECKED ON A DESERT ISLAND AND YOU COULD ONLY HAVE THREE ESSENTIAL PIECES WITH YOU, WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE, AND WHY?
Okay,  assuming that this deserted island doesn’t have anywhere for me to make my own oil, I guess I’m smoking the native flowers there… So I would have to go with a dry Sherlock, a hammer bubbler, and an 18in straight tube for morning bong rips.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MUSIC TO WORK TO/DAB TO?
Eminem, Dead South, Stick Figure, Gorillaz, Kid Rock,  just no country music.

THANK YOU, BILLY BOB´S GLASS, FOR THIS NICE INTERVIEW! WE WAIT TO SEE MORE AMAZING ARTWORK MADE BY YOU!
